AI Workers, Compared

AI bookkeepers: the category where "AI" is doing the least work

Unpopular opinion from someone who has cleaned up after two of these deployments: most AI bookkeeping is humans in the background with ML-assisted categorization, sold at software prices or service prices depending on how brave the vendor is. That's not a scam, but you should know it before you expect magic. Also know that none of them publish pricing, because they're all really quoting on your transaction volume. The table reflects what I could verify; the notes are from implementations and post-mortems.

ToolWhat it costs (checked 20 Oct 2026)My read
Puzzle Starter $30/mo, Core $72/mo, Complete $120/mo, Scale $360/mo (yearly billing saves 20%); Expert Reviewed full-service from $171/mo
free trial · monthly or annual
Rippling's old finance stack, rebuilt as AI-native accounting. Built for startups; your accountant will either love or hate the chart of accounts.
Basis Not public
custom quote
Sold to accounting firms to speed up their month-end, not to businesses directly. If your firm uses it, your invoices get cleaner.
Botkeeper $149/mo per license billed monthly ($134/mo billed annually); volume tiers 5-9 licenses $109/mo, 10-24 $79/mo, 25+ $59/mo (monthly rates)
no free trial · monthly or annual
The name promises robots; the delivery is mostly offshore accountants with good tooling. Fine product, just price it as a service.
Zeni Not public
custom quote
A full outsourced finance team with AI in the middle. Works, but you're swapping your bookkeeper for a vendor relationship, not eliminating the function.
Digits Essentials $65/mo, Core $100/mo, Pro $250/mo; firm plans from $35 per client/mo
free trial · monthly billing
The best engineering of the group; their categorization engine genuinely learns your books. Overkill if you have fewer than a few hundred transactions a month.
Before you shop here: if your books close in under two hours a month, you don't need any of this; your QuickBooks and a part-time bookkeeper beat every vendor on this page. These tools earn their keep at 500+ transactions a month or with multi-entity mess. I've watched a 12-transaction-a-month sole trader buy Botkeeper. Don't be that story.

Checked 20 Oct 2026. Three of the five now publish list pricing (Puzzle, Botkeeper, Digits); Basis and Zeni still quote per engagement, and their number moves with your transaction volume, so get it in writing before deciding. No paid placements on this page.
